Instead, the producers dragged this chit out over fifty installments. This entire convoluted story could have been told in under twenty semi-satisfying episodes. Unfortunately, it falls flat where it counts the most-the plot. Swords of Legends had all the ingredients it needed (acting, music, scenery, editing, production value) to render it a memorable classic of the shenmo-wuxia hybrid genre.

Because what’s truly frustrating isn’t that the series is bad-it’s how narrowly it misses being good. On the whole, this is an underwhelming drama that will make you constantly shake your head-mostly because of the missed opportunities. Feng Qingxue represents the prototypical “descendent of N ü wa” heroine that appears in other CRPGs such as Chinese Paladin and Xuanyuan Sword, Xiangling is based on Nie Xiaoqian from Strange Stories From a Chinese Studio, Yin Qianshang is inspired by the drunken Eight Immortals of Penglai, Princess Xunfang is a take on Lian Nishang from The Bride With White Hair, and Hong Yu is the equivalent of Hong Fu N ü from the novels Shuo Tang and Sui Tang Yanyi. It should also be noted beforehand for those of you too witless to have realized, that several of the major characters in Swords of Legends are actually based on figures from Chinese myth, history, and fiction. The plot is absurd and needlessly convoluted, resembling a nonsensical nightmare that plays out in the mind of a sleeping seven year old. The story is so asinine that by comparison, Transformers: Age of Extinction will watch like a psychological thriller. I recommend every human to stay as far away from this series as physically possible. Gujian Qitan may appear like an extravagant Christmas present on the surface, but once you get past the fancy outer wrapping, what awaits you inside is consummate disappointment. This is a drama that achieves epic levels of FAIL never before thought possible.
